TABLE OF CHORD FORMULAE This is a standard table similar to those found in many guitar method books, or chord books. This list is short but has some advanced concepts and chords. It is not complete, but still has all the most important chord types. You must understand that some chords can be described in a number of different ways.(the technical term is 'Enharmonic') 'Triads' major = 1 3 5 minor (m) = 1 b3 5 diminished (dim) = 1 b3 b5 augmented (+) = 1 3 #5 'Sevenths' major (maj7) = 1 3 5 7 minor (m7) = 1 b3 5 b7 dominant (7) = 1 3 5 b7 "half diminished" (m7b5) = 1 b3 b5 b7 diminished (dim or °) = 1 b3 b5 bb7 (bb7=6 "enharmonic") 'Ninth','Altered 7th' and 'Sus7' dominant ninth (9) = 1 3 5 b7 9 seventh sus (7sus) = 1 4 5 b7 seventh flat five (7b5) = 1 3 b5 b7 flat nine (7b9) = 1 3 5 b7 b9 seventh augmented (+7 or 7#5) = 1 3 #5 b7 sharp nine = 1 3 5 b7 #9 'Sixth' chords are not shown, as it's important to understand enharmonic equivalents. A major sixth is enharmonic to a minor seventh chord with root a minor third lower or a major sixth higher ie G6 = Em7, C6 = Am7, F6 = Dm7, Bb6 = Gm7 A minor sixth is enharmonic to a minor seven flat five with root a minor third lower or a major sixth higher ie. a Gm6 is enharmonic to a Em7b5, Cm6 = Am7b5, F6 = Dm7b5
